How many grape varieties are there in Italy?

In Italy there are over 500 native vines, i.e. grape varieties that are native to and grown only in Italy. This makes Italy one of the richest countries in the world in terms of viticultural biodiversity. Furthermore, there are also many grape varieties that are not indigenous, but which have been successfully imported and grown in Italy. Collectively, Italy is one of the largest wine producers in the world and its grape varieties are prized for their quality and diversity.
